There’s a lot on your mind when you start planning a trip. What dates are you setting aside? Which hotel are you staying at and how much is it costing you? Are you flying or are you going on a cross country road trip with the whole family?
It’s almost a never ending checklist to go through as you get ready to leave for your trip. No matter where you are going and how you are getting there, it’s not going to be a real vacation until you set out on your journey and finally relax.
Once on this journey there are a number of ways you could choose to spend an afternoon – especially when the destination is Charleston South Carolina. There are so many things to do – visit The Battery, a street full of Southern-style mansions showing off the cultural and historic past of the city – or you could check out all the old Civil War stuff, or one of the many museums…
The ideas could go on for days – but while most of your week will probably be go, go, go to pack everything in, at least one day, should be pure bliss and relaxation in nature. One great way to enjoy an afternoon in nature in South Carolina is paddle boarding.
It is a great activity that almost anyone of any age can enjoy – and you can get a view of a city or area that you would never have seen otherwise. It’s truly a great way to spend an afternoon!
Planning Your Paddle Boarding Adventure
You’re probably thinking great, now I have one more thing to try and plan! The good news is there is very little planning that needs to go into paddle boarding on vacation. The only thing you need to decide before leaving home is if you are bringing your own paddle board or renting one. Read our article on affordable paddle boards!
If you are bringing your own paddle board things may get complicated depending on the type of board you have. When traveling by car or truck it wouldn’t be as much of an inconvenience to transport a traditional board, but if you are flying this would not be a reasonable option.
A great way around this problem all together is an inflatable SUP. These are boards that are made of extremely durable materials and work just as well as any regular SUP – only they can be deflated and rolled up to a reasonably small size that is easy to store and travel with, even on a plane.
On the other hand, if you haven’t done a lot of paddle boarding before then renting a paddle board for the day is probably the best way to go. This way you can try it out and get a feel for it – maybe you will love it and will decide to invest in your own inflatable SUP – but if not then at least you got to try it without purchasing your own board yet.
Places to Paddle Board in Charleston SC
When you have that all figured out, all that’s left is to figure out where to have your paddle boarding adventure. You can research ahead of time to get places hours but you may want to consider double checking their prices with what is online – some smaller businesses do not update their prices for season and off-season.
No matter whether you are a complete newbie to paddle boarding or have all the experience in the world – Charleston SC has something to offer you in the way of places to go paddle boarding. Obviously for those who have their own paddle boards there may be more options – but if you are looking for a place to get a rental then you may be interested in these ones…
This SUP rental and lesson provider is rated #1 by the Charleston City Paper in 2015 – making it an obvious choice to include here for you guys. Looking at their website it is no wonder that they were voted number one – they have a ton of different things to offer to their customers.
The first thing to note is that they have a variety of different lessons for beginners. The Dolphin tours are all flat-water, easy going rides at various times of day. These are great tours for anyone who is new to paddle boarding or has limited experience.
For those who are a little more skilled you will love the option of the Morris Island Lighthouse tour. This tour brings you across the Folly River to see the historical light house up close. This particular tour is definitely more meant for intermediate to advanced paddlers.
Their prices for all of these tours are fair at a $45 per person rate – group rates do seem to be provided for larger parties. You can also rent a paddle board without the tour starting at $35 for one hour. The longer you rent the board the less you pay per hour and it can be rented up to 1 week.
If you are really wanting to go paddle boarding but you fear that it may be out of the budget for you and your crew then this is the place for you. If you already have paddle board experience then you can get rentals from $30 for 3 hours to $38 for 4 hours! That is really one heck of a deal!
However, they only provide rentals and not lessons. So if you are looking for a place to start your paddle boarding career this may not be it – unless you are prepared to learn via YouTube on someone’s smartphone while you try to follow their directions.
There are plenty of other places you can get lessons on Paddle Boarding in Charleston, SC – but these two are definitely the best deals for your money!
